The rain forecast for last weekend turned out to be the blink and you’ll miss it variety so I’ve been watering like mad again this week. Thankfully, rain finally fell yesterday and everything is starting to look much fresher again. This morning the sun is out and the sky is blue, for a while anyway, and it’s time for another Six on Saturday from my garden.
- Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’. This has been flowering for several weeks now and so I thought it was about time it made it into SoS. The lack of rain this year doesn’t seem to have had any effect on this plant at all, it’s a good six foot tall and hasn’t required any staking.
2. Staying with the yellow flower theme is Kniphofia ‘Percy’s Pride’, a lovely understated variety of Red-Hot poker. I just wish the flowers would die a little more tidily.
3. The final yellow this week is Clematis tangutica ‘Bill MacKenzie’. I planted this a couple of years ago to cover some trellis that hides the compost bins. It had lots of lovely new growth in early March and was then hit really badly by the Beast From The East. It took a long time to recover but has more than covered the trellis and has been flowering for months. The beautiful seed-heads will still be there well into the new year.
4. It didn’t start out as a colour themed Six but it’s the turn of the pinks next. Hesperantha, or Schizostylis as I’ve always known them, are starting to flower now. I think it’s been too dry for them this year as there doesn’t seem to be as many flowers as usual and they are smaller and on shorter stems. I’ve four varieties but can only remember the names of two of them. These are the other two! A lovely soft pink –
and a stronger pink with darker streaking.
5. A strong pink in the garden now is Anemone japonica ‘Hadspen’s Abundance’. It’s got a much simpler flower than ‘Bressingham Glow’ (SoS 25/8/18) but stays as a good clump rather than running.6. And finally, I couldn’t resist this beautiful Geranium a few weeks ago. It’s called ‘Bloom Time’.The sun’s still shining so I’m off outside. There’s foxglove seedlings to move and loads of other ‘jobs’ to do. Thanks for reading this far. Enjoy your garden this weekend and don’t forget to get your fix at our host’s site https://thepropagatorblog.wordpress.com/
Still such beautiful pictures that you took this week! I love the first with the blue sky …. I also liked the strong pink anemones. Mine are lighter. (and less numerous so far … they need time to settle)

Thanks Fred. This Anemone makes a really good clump and flowers for a long time.

What is that beautiful foliage in front of the knophofia? Or is it behind? And do those wands w/reddish buds on them belong to the foliage? Love both the clematis & hesperantha, & those anemone . . . what a lovely six you’ve given us again this week.

Thanks Lora. The plant by the Kniphofia is Persicaria virginiana ‘Bat Wings’. It’s not the showiest Persicaria in the world but sits well with the plants around it. The red spikes are the spent flower stems. The down side (there’s always one, at least!) is that it seeds around rather prolifically but as the leaves are so distinctive they’re easy enough to weed out.

Your garden looks lovely. I really like the mix of colours in that first image of the dark pink hesperantha and I love the Clematis tangutica ‘Bill MacKenzie’ against the blue sky. I haven’t had much success with the clematis in this garden, but I might give that one a try. if I can remove that darn jasmine…

Thanks Jude. I know what you mean about Jasmine. I only grow one, the variegated one, in isolation against the back wall of the house and I cut it to the ground every spring

If this one had lovely foliage it wouldn’t be too bad.

So if ‘Lemon Queen’ is 6ft, the grass behind is a mighty beast, what is it? I want one. It all looks great against that sky.

It is a beast indeed, but a well behaved one. I thought it was Panicum virgatum when I bought it but it’s too tall. I keep meaning to do some research, maybe I’ll get on with it now!

Could it be one of the tall Molinia caerulea forms, like ‘Skyracer’?

Sorry. Very delayed reply. I’ve been ferreting around the base of the plant trying to find a label but with no luck sadly. It certainly looks like pictures of the Molinia. The name ‘Skyracer’ doesn’t ring a bell but that doesn’t mean a lot these days!

It’s well worth having and is an absolute magnet for bees and hover-flies

A very pretty six, your garden is looking lovely and that Anemone is such a strong vibrant colour. I’d like one of those in my garden. Your Bloomtime Geranium is also gorgeous.

I love Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’ – it was a favourite of Christopher Lloyd’s at Great Dixter wasn’t it? Nothing wrong with a bit of colour theming 😉

I think I probably first read about it in one of his brilliant books
